University Bound Students
Students who wish to obtain the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) prior to
applying to university usually take at least 6 grade 12 level courses. Of these,
the one that all students must take is the grade 12 English. This is a very difficult course, especially
for students whose first language is not English. Before being allowed to take the grade 12 English,
students must take grade 11 English. Students may also be required to take supplementary ESL classes depending on their english level. Furthermore, students must
score at least 70% on the Yorkland English Language Test to be able to enter
the grade 11 English class.
Note: Ontario universities require a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL test, with
most requiring a score of 580 or higher.
