Important Information for Visa Students

Equivalent Credits
The Ontario Ministry of Education and Training (MET) has set the following as the standard by which equivalent credits may be granted for out-of-province secondary school studies 1 year completed (e.g. Form 3) 8 credits allowed
2 years completed (e.g. Form 3 and 4) 16 credits allowed
3 years completed (e.g. Form 3, 4, and 5) 23 credits allowed
More than three years completed 26 credits allowed

These are the maximum number of credits allowed and assume that the student was successful in those courses. Students who have failed subjects will be granted fewer credits. The determination of the number of equivalent credits is made by the principal.

University Bound Students

Students who wish to obtain the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) prior to applying to university usually take at least 6 grade 12 level courses. Of these, the one that all students must take is the grade 12 English. This is a very difficult course, especially for students whose first language is not English. Before being allowed to take the grade 12 English, students must take grade 11 English. Students may also be required to take supplementary ESL classes depending on their english level. Furthermore, students must score at least 70% on the Yorkland English Language Test to be able to enter the grade 11 English class.

Note: Ontario universities require a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL test, with most requiring a score of 580 or higher.

Optional Courses at Yorkland
Foreign students should be aware that in Ontario, there are 16 compulsory credits required for the OSSD. The majority of these credits are taken in the first two years. Therefore, there are no options in grade 9 and very few in grade 10. Furthermore, since both university and college entrance requirements frequently require mathematics, math is not optional at Yorkland before the grade 12 level. Students may also find that at least one science course is offered in grade 11 for which there is no option. Other restrictions are as follows:

  1. Students with 16 equivalent credits must take at least 1 senior social studies course and at least 2 English courses.
  2. Students with 23 equivalent credits must take at least 1 English course.
