LANGUAGE ARTS

Listening - Good listening skills are developed through daily story time, formal classroom discussions and incidental conversations. Printing - The children learn to print upper and lower case letters neatly in lines. Speaking - Oral expression is encouraged by teacher directed classroom discussions, 'Show and Tell' time, recitation and memorization of poems and Scripture passages, dramatization and informal group play times. Vocabulary is broadened by pictures and stories. Reading - Auditory and visual discrimination are developed through the teaching of our phonics program. Children are taught to hear and identify initial and final consonants, medial vowel sounds and rhyming words. They learn to blend sounds to read simple words and sentences. Many sight words, including colour and number words, are also taught.

MATHEMATICS

Students learn to count objects accurately and to count by 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's. They learn to identify, print and understand the numbers to 100. They will recognize shapes and figures; identify simple fractions (1/2, 1/4); measure linear dimensions, capacity and mass; tell time on the hour and the half hour; interpret the calendar; sort, match and classify objects and place events in sequence. They will explore concepts involving patterns, size and position through mathematical games. They will also use concrete materials to aid in the understanding of addition and subtraction facts to 10.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The program provides opportunities for gross motor development through formal lessons, games and use of exercise equipment. Children learn to co-operate in and enjoy competitive physical activities.

SOCIAL STUDIES & SCIENCE

Students develop special understanding of and desirable attitudes to others through themes such as the home and family, special holidays, seasons, simple health rules, safety rules, the church, the school, community helpers, and the elements - air, wind and weather. Children experience people, places, things and events in their own environment.
